Underneath the surface, there has always been (by my view) a tension between IT Industry Research Analysts and vendors. Some of this tension is based upon revenue as companies like Gartner, Forrester, and IDC offer independent research but also offer paid engagements/paid research for the very same vendors that are targets of the independent research. I mention those points only to emphasize the fact that recently (by my view) we have witnessed a seismic shift in the Backup/Recovery space.

Above, you can see the recent Forrester Wave for Data Resiliency. The changes are as informative as they are shocking. For their part, Gartner has not published a Magic Quadrant for this space for quite some time. One of the reasons for that is the exit of their top analysts in the space to startup vendors that are bringing new solutions into the market for Backup/Recovery (or as Forrester is calling it: “Data Resiliency”). The main reason for the pause between Analyst Reports in this key area of Enterprise Information Technology is that everything has changed.

The pace of change in Information Technology has developed new solutions that are based on completely new ways of handling Backup/Recovery (aka Data Resiliency). The unrelenting growth of data that IT Leaders need to protect and provide resiliency has broken their solutions in most cases. The fact that critical enterprise data is now located across SaaS, IaaS, and on-premise data centers have stressed/broken older technology solutions that simply were not built for this new landscape. The actual Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) for most Enterprise IT organizations are well outside of reasonable business expectations.
